Wolverine Tube, Inc. reported results for the third quarter 2009 in its Form 10-Q filed on November 17, 2009. The net loss for the third quarter of 2009 was $7.2 million compared to a net loss of $23.9 million in the same period for 2008. The 2008 results include a $44.0 million Goodwill Impairment charge and a gain on divestitures of $21.7 million.

The Wolverine Venture Fund (WVF), part of the University of Michigan's Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Ross School of Business, today announced a record-setting $2 million return on its strategic venture capital investments in HandyLab. An Ann Arbor-based developer and manufacturer of molecular diagnostic products, HandyLab entered into an agreement earlier this fall to be acquired by BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX). The transaction closed on Nov.

TEPPCO, which planned to build a 14-million-gallon fuel depot a half mile upstream of Decatur Utilities' sole water intake, has canceled its plans. Spokesman Rick Rainey said public opposition, combined with the Oct. 26 acquisition of TEPPCO by Enterprise Products, persuaded the company to cancel its plans. "We've decided not to exercise the option to purchase the tract on the Wolverine property," Rainey said.

The Wellington High School varsity football team completed its encouraging season on Friday, Nov. 13 at home. While nothing strange happened on the scary date, the Wolverines did defeat the visiting Suncoast Chargers 34-20. Junior Ryan McGovern, Wellington resident and a Wellington Landings graduate, started at quarterback for the Chargers.

The Dead Schembechlers — the Columbus-based pseudo-punk bank that has made a career out of trashing all things Ann Arbor — apparently won't be playing here after all. Earlier this year, the band announced that it would play its first-ever Ann Arbor show as part of the run-up to this year's University of Michigan/Ohio State football game , which kicks off at noon Saturday in Michigan Stadium. Apparently, there's been a change of plans.

Doing their part for 'Beat Michigan Week,' a group of fourth graders at Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington took over the Ohio State University campus Wednesday. They're banging the drum to beat breast cancer and ABC6 Sports Anchor Anthony Rothman captured their youthful spirit as the big Buckeye-Wolverine face-off nears. Wednesday's mid-week pep talk didn't come from the coaches -- it came from an excited group of future Buckeyes.

The nonprofit World Against Toys Causing Harm Inc. has released its annual list of the "10 Worst Toys," which are evaluated for potential safety hazards the toys pose to children. World Against Toys Causing Harm (or WATCH) has researched potential safety flaws and dangers in toys for more than 30 years. This year's list includes a book, a stuffed animal and, perhaps not surprisingly, a faux rocket launcher.
